July 9: Byron Matthews

July 9, 2011

A tall dark stranger/ the fortune teller said to her delight/ but somehow never mentioned/ the robes, the hood, or the/ long sharp scythe.

Byron Matthews haunts the mountains east of Albuquerque, where he lives with his wife, a cellist, and Barney, devil dog from Hell.

I like the rhythm, the almost-rhyme of “delight” and “scythe” and the twist on the “tall dark stranger”.
